Gilead Cafe

I bought a voucher for Gilead Cafe and decided to head there for lunch today.

I was looking forward to trying one of Jamie Kennedy's restaurants unfortunately, it ended up being a huge disappointment.

First off.

We arrived around 1:30pm and the place was packed. At first we were confused as to what to do. There was no host to greet us and I had to ask the cashier if I was suppose to seat myself or do I wait for a host or hostess to help me. He told me that we would have to find a seat on our own then come up to the counter to order and then the server will call our name and bring the food over to the table when it's ready. Pretty simple but one bad thing was there were no tables available. To kill the time I snapped some pictures.

Here is the menu all written on the chalkboard.

Here is a wall filled with jars of jams, syrup, and pickled items.

Ten minutes later we finally snatched an empty table.

I had my eye on the short rib poutine so I already knew what to order. That was the only reason why I wanted to try the cafe in the first place. Sadly, it did not live up to my expectations. It was extremely salty. Think it came from the pool of cheese oil that was gathering at the bottom of the bowl. It did not look appetizing at all. One positive aspect was that the fries were crispy just the way I liked it. I think the poutine at Mildred's Temple Kitchen is 10 times better than this and definitely more flavorful too.

My cousin had the pork schnitzel with anchovy mignonette. It was HORRIBLE. I swear it tasted like something rotten but I just couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. Both the meat and the sauce was repulsive. I just couldn't pick which item was worse. I saw another patron with the exact dish and she made a face as well so at least I knew I wasn't the only one who didn't enjoyed it.

For dessert we chose the vanilla creme brulee with amaretti. It was too creamy. The texture felt more like a pudding and it was overly sweet. I liked the cookie though.

I have never been to any of Jamie's restaurants but after this experience I don't think I will want to try it either. Luckily I had a voucher otherwise to spend so much money on food that I did not enjoy at all is just plain ridiculous. Oh well at least now I can cross it off my list.

TOTAL BILL $42...ONCE IS ENOUGH!!!

Complete waste of time and money. I went with 3 friends who are foodies, but you don't have to be a foodie to know this is overpriced slop.

Among the more serious faux pas was the fiddleheads and morels on toast dish, where they forgot to wash one or both of the ingredients (the toast I hope was clean) so it was too gritty to eat and tasted like mud.

We ordered celoubiac (kolyubyaka) and it was dreadful. It's a classic french/russian loaf with puff pastry that includes rice or rice noodles, spinach, mushrooms, salmon...this one had salmon in bread and some mushroom. Pathetic. We did not finish it.

Another 7 dishes were all disappointing. The roast pork was dry, overdone; the charcoutrie uninspired. In the end we ordered french fries which tasted mostly of cardboard.

The service was efficient but pretentious, but the wine was good.
