Stinky tofu is not called stinky for no reason.
I was walking around First Markham until Sue sniffed the air and told me she smelled stinky tofu. I have never ate it before so she insisted that I give it a try. We got Sand to also try it too even though he kept crying NOOOOOOOO!!! But hey since he never tried it thought we should try it together.
Once we entered the place I got smacked with the offensive odour. I swear I thought I couldn't see for a bit. The smell was so potent that it stung my eyes. I had to fight the urge to turn around and run back out the door but, Sue said we should try it and dammit not gonna let some repulsive smell stop me. Man I should've run when I had the chance:(
I can't read Chinese so have no clue what this even says.
When the plate arrived I couldn't breathe. Even holding my breath the smell still lingered in my nose. It was abominable. Me and Sand looked at each other, plugged our noses and then scoop a piece of the horrendous tofu into our mouths. I have to say the taste was ok but I just couldn't get over the stench.
At least I can now say I've tried stinky tofu. The after affects weren't so great. Every time I burped I could smell the foul odour. Think my body was punishing me for what I did so it kept reminding me throughout the nite the errors of my ways:(
Thanks Sand for eating it with me even though I know deep inside you wanna kill me^_^ As for Sue, I'm gonna get you back for this;p

When it is made fresh it is really stinky! That was basically all I can smell when I went to Taste of Asia. There were at least 6 stinky tofu vendors there and seemed like alot of people never had it since a lot of people were gagging a bit or plugging up their noses!
There is another kind of stinky tofu I had at a place near Chalmer's Gate where it was in a stew. It wasn't nearly as strong in aroma.
That dry kind is really strong since it seems to intensify the flavor when they fry it. My tongue almost get the same tingling sensation as if I had the szechwan peppers.
Personally I can handle stinky tofu but I draw the line on durian. I tell my family to stay in the basement and close the doors until they are done and there is no more odor! lol
I have never, ever heard of stinky tofu. Not a big tofu person in general but now I know to stay away from this one!
My friends was just talking about this place the other day and suggested that we all go try... I not a bit fan of tofu so I like it HK style where you load it with sweet and hot sauce =P
NEVER again for me;p
i can still smell it yuck
